The Most Popular Renovation Trends 2022

With house prices soaring and the housing market so competitive, it may not seem like a great time to move at the moment. But, if you’re in need of some extra space, expecting a new addition to the family or require a dedicated work-from-home area, moving might seem like your only option. However, it’s not!

Many homeowners are now looking to improve and refresh their living spaces through renovation projects. In fact, through a variety of renovation and home improvement projects, you can make your home feel brand new, while perfectly tailoring it to your needs.

While these projects can make your home feel brand new, they can also add value to your property, making home renovations a great investment.

With this in mind, we wanted to find out which home renovation trends are the most popular on TikTok in 2022, from aesthetic bathroom transformations to stunning kitchen re-designs, and identify which can add the most value to your home.

How popular is home renovation in 2022?

Before we look at the different home renovation trends, we wanted to find out just how popular home renovation and improvement projects are in 2022.

Renovation

#Renovation videos are massively popular on TikTok with the hashtag racking up a whopping 9.2 billion views! The current most successful renovation videos range from a yellow duck-themed bedroom for a 5-year-old (that garnered over 21 million views!) to a basement-to-nightclub renovation that racked up nearly 65 million views.

The most popular rooms to renovate

When we look at the popularity of home renovations on a room-by-room basis, we can see which parts of the house are the most popular to get a makeover.

#KitchenRenovation - 327.3 million TikTok views

The heart of the home, our kitchens see years of precious family moments, from kids’ art proudly displayed on the fridge to the chaos of Christmas dinner prep. So, it’s no surprise that kitchen renovations are so popular! With 327.3 million TikTok views, it looks as though kitchens are getting the most attention this year. And underfloor heating makes for the perfect upgrade when undertaking a kitchen renovation, with 18.7 million TikTok views alongside kitchen renovation searches.

The most popular home renovation trends and features of 2022

Looking at a variety of specific trends and additions, we can see which trends are the most popular in 2022. From upgrades in the kitchen to new items for the garden, there are plenty of trends that could make your home feel brand new.

Smart Home - 4.2 billion TikTok views

Turning your home into a smart home not only modernises your house but can also make your life more efficient as well as bring down your energy bills. As you have control over various elements of your home from the touch of a button, you can turn off lights from the comfort of your bed, adjust your heating and cooling with a smart thermostat or even keep your home secure with a doorbell camera.

The renovation trends adding the most value to your home

Undertaking home renovations doesn’t just make your home a great place to live for you and your family, it can also add a huge amount of value to your home.

Solar Panels - 38% added value

While installing solar panels can be a costly undertaking, it can add a huge amount of value to your home, with estimates as high as 38% of the value of your home dependent on where you live in the UK. This is largely because you can make massive savings on energy bills, and with the cost of living on the rise, these additions will become even more appealing to those looking to buy a new home.

With government green initiatives available to those looking to upgrade their homes, you may be able to apply for a grant or loan to help with the costs of making your home a little greener. The Green Deal can provide support for renovations such as solar panels, double glazing and insulation.

Additionally, if you do have solar panels or other electricity-producing technologies, you may be able to take advantage of the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), a government-backed initiative that allows you to be paid for excess low-carbon electricity which can be exported back to the National Grid.

How to renovate your home on a budget

With 2.7 million TikTok views for #BudgetHomeRenovation, we can see that budget is extremely important to many homeowners. With the rise of the cost of living, as well as mortgage interest rates increasing, investing in current homes while keeping within a budget is more essential than ever.

With that in mind, we’ve put together a few tips to help you stick to a budget when making home improvements.

Don’t take your first quote

If you’re needing to employ the services of a professional, whether that’s a kitchen fitter or an electrician, make sure you get a number of quotes before committing. With that being said, you may not want to opt for the cheapest quote as you’ll need to balance cost with quality. While you’re getting quotes, you should also look for reviews to ensure that you don’t compromise on excellent work to stay on budget.

Make simple changes

A home renovation project doesn’t need to involve ripping out full rooms and completely redesigning them. In fact, just a few simple changes or additions can make a huge difference to a room and make it feel brand new. Adding a patterned tile to your kitchen backsplash or adding a stair runner rather than completely recarpeting can be cost-efficient methods of giving your home a fresh look.

Rediscover your home’s original beauty

Trends come and go, so if you own an older home, you may find that there are hidden gems underneath modernised features. Perhaps your living room doesn’t need new flooring but the floorboards could be stripped to expose their original charm that has been hidden by layers of paint or carpet.

Our favourite home renovation songs

If you’re planning on undertaking some home renovations, you’ll need a great playlist to keep you motivated! We took a look at a number of playlists made by users on Spotify with titles like ‘home renovation’ and ‘home improvement’ to discover the songs that appear most frequently in these reno-motivating playlists.

  • Back in Black - AC/DC
  • Highway to Hell - AC/DC
  • Don’t Stop Believin’ - Journey
  • We Didn’t Start the Fire - Billy Joel
  • You Can’t Hurry Love - The Supremes
  • Thunderstruck - AC/DC
  • Carry on Wayward Son - Kansas
  • Rocket Man (I Think It’s Going To Be A Long, Long Time) - Elton John
  • Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd
  • Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap - AC/DC

Methodology

We began by collating a number of home renovation trends using sites such as Houzz and Architectural Digest. Using these trends as well as search terms for a variety of room renovations, we used TikTok to find the number of views on tagged videos to discover their popularity.

Added value was taken from Checkatrade, taking the highest amount that each trend could add in value.

In addition, we discovered the most popular renovation songs by using Playlist Miner to search for playlists using ‘home renovation’, ‘home improvement’, ‘home makeover’ or ‘working on the house’ in their titles. We then took the most popular 100 songs for each phrase before totalling the number of instances of each song on these playlists.
