What Is Underfloor Heating?

Find out what makes these systems flow or glow!

Underfloor heating is a method of heating indoor spaces by installing a heating system underneath the floor surface. This system generates heat that rises from the floor and warms up the room, providing a comfortable and even distribution of heat. It's an alternative to traditional heating systems like radiators.

Types of underfloor heating

There are two main types of underfloor heating systems, electric underfloor heating and water underfloor heating.

  1. Electric Underfloor Heating: This system involves installing electric heating cables or mats directly under the floor surface. These cables or mats heat up when electricity passes through them. Electric underfloor heating is often used in smaller areas or as a supplementary heating source in specific rooms, like bathrooms or kitchens.
  2. Water Underfloor Heating or wet underfloor heating: In this system, pipes or tubes are installed beneath the floor, through which warm water is circulated to provide heat. The water is heated by a central boiler or heat pump and then pumped through the pipes to warm the floor and, consequently, the room above. Water underfloor heating is more commonly used for whole-house heating due to its energy efficiency and even distribution of warmth.

Which type of underfloor heating is best?

Every type of underfloor heating system offers distinct advantages, rendering each more appropriate for certain types of projects. Here are a few essential considerations to bear in mind while selecting the most suitable type of underfloor heating for your requirements.

Benefits of Electric Underfloor Heating

  • Easy to install
  • Cheaper to install in smaller areas ie kitchens/bathrooms
  • Can be retro fitted into existing rooms with minimum disruption
  • Will only increase floor height from as little as 3mm
  • Can choose wattage output for different scenarios
