The Underfloor Heating Store Embraces Sustainable Living with The Cambridge Building Society's Retrofit Project!

Are you passionate about reducing your carbon footprint and making your home more energy-efficient? The Cambridge Building Society has launched an inspiring project that might just be the motivation you need!

Cambridge Building Society is retrofitting a 1930s semi-detached house in Ferndale Rise, Cambridge, transforming it into a model of sustainable living. The goal is to improve the property's Energy Performance Certificate rating from a D to a B, showcasing how affordable and practical energy-efficient solutions can be implemented. This endeavor aligns with Cambridge Building Society's commitment to environmental stewardship and community well-being.

Key Sustainability Improvements

  • Insulation: Internal, external, ground, and loft insulation to keep the house warm and reduce energy consumption. Proper insulation is crucial for maintaining a stable indoor temperature and significantly cutting down on heating costs.

  • Air Source Heat Pump: Replacing traditional heating systems with a more sustainable option. Air source heat pumps are an excellent alternative, extracting heat from the outside air even in lower temperatures.

  • Mechanical Ventilation System with Heat Recovery: Ensuring fresh air while retaining heat. This system improves indoor air quality and reduces the need for additional heating.

  • Green Roof: Adding a green roof to the rear extension to improve insulation and biodiversity. Green roofs offer several benefits, including better insulation, stormwater management, and habitat for wildlife.

  • Solar Panels: Considering the installation of solar panels to harness renewable energy. Solar energy is a clean, renewable source that can help reduce electricity bills and the household's carbon footprint.

  • Triple Glazing: Installing triple glazing to enhance energy efficiency. Triple-glazed windows offer superior insulation compared to double-glazed or single-glazed alternatives.

  • LED Lighting: Switching to energy-efficient LED lighting. LEDs are known for their long lifespan and reduced energy consumption compared to traditional lighting options.

  • Water Underfloor Heating : Prowarm underfloor heating from the one and only The Underfloor Heating Store! Underfloor heating is a fantastic addition to the retrofit, providing consistent and efficient heat distribution.

We are honored to be a part of such an important project, so our team visited the site to see the progress for ourselves. Luckily, we caught them at a great time, as they were in the process of laying our ProWarm underfloor heating. Check out how our visit went here!

Underfloor Heating and Thermostats for Sustainable Living

Underfloor heating is a game-changer for sustainable living. Unlike traditional radiators that heat the air, underfloor heating warms the floor and objects in the room, leading to a more even and comfortable temperature. This method requires lower water temperatures, reducing energy consumption and costs.

The Underfloor Heating Store offers a range of smart thermostats that enhance the efficiency of your heating system. These thermostats allow you to control the temperature of different zones in your home, ensuring optimal comfort and energy savings. By programming the heating schedule to match your lifestyle, you can avoid unnecessary energy use and lower your carbon footprint.

Cambridge Building Society has partnered with local experts and businesses, including Koru Construction, Pip Architecture, and Rethink Buildings, to ensure the project's success. These partners bring their expertise in sustainable construction and design to the table, making this project a true community effort. The collaborative approach ensures that the latest technologies and best practices are incorporated into the retrofit.

Education and Awareness

A significant aspect of this project is education. Cambridge Building Society is committed to sharing their sustainability journey with the community. They will document every step, share learnings, and provide tips and advice from industry experts. This transparency aims to inspire and empower homeowners to make similar changes in their own homes. Workshops, online resources, and community events will be organised to spread awareness about the benefits and feasibility of sustainable living.

Long-term Impact

The impact of this project extends beyond just one house. By demonstrating that sustainable retrofitting is both achievable and affordable, Cambridge Building Society hopes to set a precedent for other homeowners and housing providers. The long-term benefits of reduced energy consumption, lower utility bills, and a smaller carbon footprint contribute to a more sustainable and resilient community.
